Frescoes, chapels and stories – experience Taisten

In Taisten, history, art, and faith blend in a remarkable way. The visit begins with St. George’s Church, the oldest in the parish, built around 800 as a fortified sanctuary and first mentioned in 861. Inside, late Gothic frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the famous St. Christopher fresco, once believed to protect travellers, leave a lasting impression. Another highlight is the parish church of Taisten with the Erasmus Chapel, burial place of the Counts of Welsperg. Beautifully crafted tombstones and memorial shields reflect the family’s historical significance. The tour ends at the carefully designed cemetery, a place of peace and reflection. Parking with parking meter at the Self Service Infopoint in Taisten. The meeting point can be reached in 5–10 minutes on foot.

Green mobility:

Bus lines 441 and 438, bus stop “Taisten (Welsberg), Raika”. The meeting point can be reached in 5–10 minutes on foot.

Good to know

Südtirol Guest Pass – Gsiesertal-Welsberg-Taisten Card. Bringing a snack and a drink is recommended. Equipment: sturdy footwear, appropriate clothing, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), rain protection.
