Kalksteinjöchl ski tour in the Gsiesertal Valley

In the past, goods were smuggled across Kalksteinjöchl 2349 m – today, the pass into the Villgraten Valley in East Tyrol is a popular destination for hikers in summer and ski tourers in winter. After around 820 vertical metres, you reach Kalksteinjöchl. If you want to continue higher, you can climb from here to Gailspitze. The summit cross at 2,494 m is reached after another 120 vertical metres. The rest of the group can use these approximately 30 minutes to rest and enjoy the peaceful winter surroundings. Bring your own provisions.

Difficulty: Kalksteinjöchl easy, Gail medium.

Time: 08:30 am.-04:00 pm.

Altitude difference: Kalksteinjöchl 820 m, Gail 1000 m.

Route length: 11,5 km / Kalksteinjöchl: 2-2,5 h / Gail: 3-3,5 h

Meeting point: 08:30 am. at the Head of the valley, St. Magdalena in the Gsiesertal Valley.

Cost: Single tour: 125 € with GP, 135 € without GP. Package of 3 tours: 351 € with GP, 361 € without GP.

Meeting point: at the end of the valley, in front of the Talschlusshütte.

How to get to Gsiesertal Valley:

By car, follow the SS49-E66 to the Welsberg West exit and take the road into Gsiesertal Valley. It passes through Pichl and St. Martin before reaching St. Magdalena at the end of the valley.


By public transport, take the Pustertal train to Welsberg. From there, take bus 441 into Gsiesertal Valley, which stops in Pichl, St. Martin and St. Magdalena.

Good to know

For the ski tour, you’ll need touring skis with suitable climbing skins, ski touring boots, poles and a helmet, as well as a complete avalanche safety kit (transceiver, shovel and probe). Wear warm, weatherproof clothing and bring gloves, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Pack a change of clothes, a snack and a warm drink in your backpack.
